Protecting Your Vehicle From Catalytic Converter Theft

Why it happens

Catalytic converters contain small quantities of precious metals, making them valuable enough to scrap metal buyers that theft has become a genuine issue in some areas — often taking only a few minutes with the right tools.

Parking smart

Where possible, park in well-lit areas, inside a garage overnight if you have one, or nose-in against a wall or barrier that makes access to the underbody more difficult. Simple changes to where and how you park meaningfully reduce opportunistic theft.

Physical deterrents

A dedicated catalytic converter shield or cage adds enough time and difficulty to the theft that many opportunistic thieves will simply move on to an easier target. Etching the converter's serial number also helps police identify and return a stolen unit, and can deter resale.

If it happens to you

Report it to police immediately (theft reports help identify patterns in your area), check your insurance policy for coverage, and get several repair quotes before proceeding — costs can vary significantly between workshops for the same job.

The bigger picture

No single measure guarantees protection, but smart parking, a physical deterrent, and marked identification together make a real difference in whether your vehicle is seen as an easy target.
